Event Details

The 4th Annual Institute for the Church and Community Arts (ICCA) will be held June 1-5, 2005, at the Mother Boniface Spirituality Center in NW Philadelphia. The Institute for the Church and Community Arts (ICCA) is designed for community leaders, ministers, youth workers, social workers, artists, educators and others who want to integrate the arts in their community, church, and after-school programs and classes. ICCA is designed to teach leadership skills--from gaining basic philosophical and theological foundations to the practical of day-to-day work of planning, fundraising, designing and implementing curriculum and learning about basic arts skills. No educational prerequisites are required. While arts skills help, ICCA provides the necessary background for the leader who is new to the concept of arts-integration. Basic planning skills are relevant for any non-profit leader. EDUCATION. . . .HEALING. . . .RECONCILIATION The theme for ICCA 2005 is “Education, Healing, Reconciliation.” We recognize the value artists and the arts bring to the transformation of communities. We recognize that most professional and lay artists lack training in how to initiate change in communities that present unusual challenges of economic and political injustice. We also are aware that most community and church leaders do not know how to harness the power of the arts for outreach and transformation. ICCA 2005 seeks to address these issues and establish a forum for sharing creative and effective solutions through integrating the arts into community based service and community mission. WHAT COURSES ARE OFFERED? Courses offered will include Therapy and Healing through the Arts; Working with At-Risk Children; Arts, Spirituality and Youth; Drama for Conflict Resolution; Starting and Maintaining a Community Arts Program; Fundraising and Grant Writing; Writing Arts Curriculum and Designing Assessments, as well as foundational courses in Arts Based Community Development and the Theological and Philosophical Foundations for Arts-based Programs. Workshops in practical art skills include Developing and Implementing Curriculum for Teaching Life Skills (Life Arts Academy), Telling Your Story through Video, Teaching Reading and Writing through Creative Publishing, Starting and Managing a Community Dance Group, How To Start a Children's Choir, and Using Puppets To Build Cultural Awareness. Special features include premiers of the Money News Network (Life Arts Academy) and the documentary, "Givin' It Up," a film about the hidden problem of children sexually abusing children. A creative worship experience and an arts tour will be offered. HOW IS ICCA STRUCTURED? ICCA is an annual five-day residency-based institute. Courses are offered in 1.5 to 2 hour blocks throughout the day as participants are engaged in interactive classes. Participants choose from foundational theory, applied arts methods, and arts skills classes. WHERE IS ICCA HELD? This year ICCA will be held at the Mother Boniface Spirituality Center in Northeast Philadelphia. Classes, meals, housing, the collaborative art project and networking will be in one location. HOW MUCH DOES ICCA COST? Full registration, inclusive of instruction, food, housing and materials, is $450. Single courses or a single day rate is $150. Non-residential registration is $350. Travel to the site is the responsibility of the participant. University tuition through Eastern University is extra. HOW IS ICCA FUNDED? ICCA is funded through registrations, local grants, and education and professional collaborations. Past sponsors of the Philadelphia-based institute have included the Philadelphia Department of Human Services (Division of Community Based Prevention Services), The Philadelphia Association of Christian Schools, The Philadelphia Foundation, Temple University, The Conwell Inn, The Corner Bakery, Songhai Press, The Kardon Institute for Arts Therapy, St. Paul's Baptist Church and the Campolo School for Social Change at Eastern University, Philadelphia. HOW DO I GET UNIVERSITY CREDIT FOR ICCA? Undergraduate and graduate credit and ACT 48 Teacher Certification credit are available through Eastern University.
